Freeze Over makes hot debut for Ellerton Zahra Racing at Valley

Feb 09, 2018

Freeze Over made the perfect start to her career with Ellerton Zahra Racing with a smart win at Moonee Valley.

Freeze Over was a debut winner in town for the John Sadler stable last autumn and had not raced since last May before joining trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra.

The Exceed And Excel filly came to the stable in good order and promised plenty with her work and jumpouts before her first-up outing in the Nelson Alexander Handicap (1000m).

Damian Lane was aboard Freeze Over in the $40,000 contest and gave the filly the perfect trip in front, controlling the race from the outset before she dashed home in the straight to score comfortably.

A feature of Freeze Over’s win was the fact Lane never used the whip on the speedster, preferring to look after his mount late as she had her opposition covered in the last 200m.

“It’s her first prep with us and obviously we’re learning a bit about her,” Zahra said.

“She travelled nicely and had a nice kick at the end.

“She has been well seasoned and educated and she had a nice hit-out.”

Zahra said the stable would look for harder races for Freeze Over, who should improve with racing.

“She’s in good order so we’ll poke around the autumn and try to find a nice stakes race,” Zahra said.

“She’s getting into our routine and that will tighten her up nicely.”

Freeze Over’s win was special for the stable as Ellerton and Zahra also trained her dam Big Chill, who won the Group 3 Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) in South Australia as two-year-old.

Congratulations to Freeze Over’s owners and all involved with the smart galloper’s Moonee Valley victory.
