Light Romance closes 2017 in style at Sandown

Dec 30, 2017

Ellerton Zahra Racing ended 2017 in winning fashion after the smart filly Light Romance over-ran her rivals to notch a city win at Sandown.

Light Romance scored on debut at Seymour in October but returned from a short break with a solid third at Moonee Valley before her Sandown success.

Trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra were keen to step up Light Romance in trip and the 1300m of the Ladbrokes Cash In Handicap at Sandown was the perfect option.

Apprentice Ben Thompson, who has built a neat partnership with Ellerton Zahra Racing in the last 12 months, was happy to let Light Romance find her feet midfield before the daughter of Lonhro powered home over top over her opposition in the long Sandown straight to score by a half-length.

“I thought she was impressive,” Thompson said.

“It was without a doubt the toughest task she has had to face and she did it really well.

“She was tough and gave every sign that the further she goes the better she is going to be in time.”

Light Romance’s second win from four starts earned connections an $87,000 winner’s cheque, taking her stakes tally to more than $114,000.

Light Romance is also the second city winner that Ellerton and Zahra have trained out of the Danehill mare Homecoming Queen, who won twice in 10 starts for the stable herself.

Congratulations to Light Romance’s owners at Hesket Racing and to all involved with the promising three-year-old’s Sandown victory.
