Now a city win for Club Tropicana at Sandown

Nov 29, 2017

Club Tropicana can be unpredictable but her talent was again on show when she notched her maiden city success at Sandown.

Club Tropicana demolished a small field from the front at Sale at her previous outing, but she faced a contrasting set of circumstances in the United Petroleum Handicap (1000m).

Trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra had enough faith in Club Tropicana to give her a shot at Benchmark 70 level at Sandown, but the greater number of rivals forced a change of tactics for jockey Craig Williams.

Williams had to overcome Club Tropicana’s barrier 12 in the $40,000 contest but decided to let the daughter of Smart Missile settle off the pace while the speed was on to her inside early in the race.

Club Tropicana built momentum early in the long Sandown Hillside straight, but she hit top gear in the last 200m, running home over the top of the leaders to score by a half-length.

“She’s always had the ability, but she can be a bit of a handful at times,” Zahra said.

“She has got her quirks but it’s worth the wait because she has got a fair bit of ability.

“Some days she is good and other days she’s not. We took her to the jumpouts and she went off her tree, so she went down to Julien (Welsh) to do a bit of work with her again and she’s been faultless since then.

“Hopefully he barrier manners can continue to improve, and she’ll go through her grades.”

Club Tropicana’s step up to a city win brought connections a $22,000 winner’s cheque while the victory was the third of her 12-start career that also features five minor placings.

Congratulations to Club Tropicana’s owners and all involved in the great work done to get the mare into the winner’s circle in town.
