Crystal helps owners live the dream at Sandown

Nov 18, 2017

Crystal Dreamer could hardly have been more impressive in his return to winning ways at Sandown.

The son of Stratum has competed well when second at Listed level during the Flemington carnival but was searching for his first spring success in the Listed Doveton Stakes at Sandown.

Trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra also had the in-form sprinter Rock ‘N’ Gold in the race but Crystal Dreamer gave neither his stablemate or his rivals a chance as he dominated the race from the front.

Jockey Damian Lane let Crystal Dreamer show his customary pace to lead the $120,000 race to the home turn before the gelding dashed away in the last 300m to score by 2 ¼ lengths.

Ellerton said he had a minor concern with Crystal Dreamer racing nine days after his Oaks day outing but the five-year-old thrilled the stable with his effort.

"My only concern with him was backing up from Oaks day, but he did that with ease,” Ellerton said.

"Damian controlled the race on him today and he was well in the race with just a kilogram above the minimum.

"But he showed he's right back to his best with that win today."

Crystal Dreamer’s Sandown win was the prolific winner’s first stakes success but Ellerton said the win could make the winner of nine of 21 starts hard to place in the future.

"He might start to get a bit tricky to place now," Ellerton said.

"We'll see how he pulls up and no doubt we'll find something else for him."

Crystal Dreamer earned a $72,500 winner’s cheque for his brilliant Sandown win, taking his prizemoney tally to more than $415,060.

Congratulations to wonderful stable supporters Contract Racing and Breeding on yet another victory in partnership with Ellerton Zahra Racing.
