Ellerton Zahra's Cup week show rolls on to Cranbourne
Nov 10, 2017
Ellerton Zahra Racing’s brilliant spring run continued when Gaudi led his rivals a merry dance at Cranbourne.
Trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra as well as their wonderful team of staff had previously enjoyed a terrific Melbourne Cup week with a Flemington double on Cup day, a double at Kyneton 24 hours later and a great victory in the opening race on Oaks day at Flemington.
Gaudi was always going to be hard to beat after his solid efforts at Mornington and Echuca, where the son of Master Of Design ran a good fourth in a maiden in which his stablemate Prezado finished second before blitzing his opposition down the Flemington straight on Melbourne Cup day.
Jockey Chris Symons has been a huge part of Ellerton Zahra Racing’s Cup week roll and he sent Gaudi straight to the front in the Cranbourne Holden and Hyundai 3YO Maiden Plate (1300m) and the three-year-old was never headed.
Gaudi got better as the race went on before scoring a comfortable 2 ¼ length win to break his maiden at his third start.
“I’m riding for the right stable at the moment and aren’t they flying at the moment, the Ellerton Zahra camp?” Symons said.
“I came out neutral on him because I was hoping to get a bit of cover on him.
“He’s going to get a bit of ground. He’s got the best attitude and we’ve always known he had ability.
“I just let him find his feet and he landed in front. We got some pretty easy sectionals. I upped the ante at the 600(m) and improved at the 400(m) and it was a dominant win.”
Gaudi was a $60,000 purchase at the 2016 Inglis Premier Yearling Sale in Melbourne and he looks to be another inspired buy from Ellerton Zahra Racing.
The gelding earned connections a $23,250 winner’s cheque at Cranbourne, which took his overall earnings to more than $30,000 in only three starts.
Congratulations to Gaudi’s big bunch of owners and all involved with the smart galloper maiden win.
