Odeon going for Group 1 glory in Emirates Stakes 2017

Nov 10, 2017

When a stable is on a roll, it makes sense to try and cash in on that fortune in Saturday’s $2 million Emirates Stakes (2000m) at Flemington.

Training partners Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra have had three winners at the Melbourne Cup Carnival 2017 with a double on Tuesday and another victory in the opening race of Thursday’s Oaks day program.

Odeon was one of the stable’s winners when he scored a dominant win at Listed level on Cup day, but Zahra said the team was happy to give him a shot at a maiden Group I win in the Emirates Stakes.

Zahra said he and Ellerton had planned to start Odeon in the Emirates Stakes some weeks ago, provided the son of Zacinto pulled up well from his Melbourne Cup day assignment.

“It was always the plan to accept and see how he pulls up,” Zahra said.

“If he seems to pull up all right then we’ll have a crack because it has fallen away a bit.

“There might be a few afterthoughts in there and he’s flying.

“We’ll keep the call until Saturday morning but so far, he’s pulled up well, ate his feed and was bouncing this morning so he’s away.”

Odeon drew perfectly in barrier three for the Emirates Stakes, but Zahra said a good speed on would help the Group I South Australian Derby placegetter produce his best performance.

“It would be great if there is good speed because he travels a lot better off a good tempo,” Zahra said.

“His best races are when there’s speed on. When he won at Caulfield (two starts back), they went quickly, and he sprinted well off that and they went fast again on Tuesday.

“The quicker they go the better for him.”

Chris Symons will again be aboard Odeon for his attempt to complete a hat-trick of wins this time in.
