Blithe Belle back to best at Ballarat
Sep 24, 2017
Blithe Belle gave her rivals a start and beating to continue a great run for Ellerton Zahra Racing at Ballarat.
The mare became the stable’s fifth winner in eight days when she let down brilliantly to claim the Hygain Winners Choice BM64 Handicap (1200m).
Blithe Belle struggled over 1300m at her previous outing at Bendigo but the drop back to 1200m and more speed enabled the daughter of Hard Spun to score a soft win.
Jockey Chris Symons took Blithe Belle back to last early in the $25,000 race and left the mare to find her feet before sending her around her rivals from the 450m.
Blithe Belle relished the clear running to chase down the leader before drawing away to score by 1 ¼ lengths.
“She’s hot and cold but she’s always thereabouts,” Symons said. “She runs a lot of seconds.
“The key to her is that she has got to be off the bit.
“The pace was on and with the pattern of the day, we were probably guaranteed a bit of tempo in this race, which we got.
“From the 600m, she started to pick up the bit and she was never going to get beaten from the 400m.”
Blithe Belle’s barnstorming finish gave the five-year-old her third win in 19 starts but the $13,750 winner’s cheque took her stakes tally to more than $124,000.
Congratulations to Blithe Belle’s big bunch of happy owners and all involved with the handy sprinter’s return to winning ways.
