More Zacinto success and another opportunity awaits

Aug 28, 2017

Ellerton Zahra Racing maintained its perfect record with the progeny of Kiwi stallion Zacinto when Into Rio scored a determined win at Wangaratta.

Trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra went close to a winning a Group I with a son of Zacinto when smart stayer Odeon ran third in the South Australian Derby in the autumn and Into Rio is showing plenty of staying promise himself.

Into Rio wasn’t too far away when midfield at Sandown on debut in July before jumping awkwardly from the barriers and never figuring at Bendigo second-up before his Wangaratta success.

Ellerton and Zahra stepped Into Rio up from 1300m to 1590m for the Ovens Ford Wangaratta Maiden Plate and the extra distance was the catalyst for an improved effort from the three-year-old.

Apprentice Ben Thompson was content to let Into Rio settle midfield before improving three-wide from the 600m and four-wide rounding the home turn.

A bump sent Into Rio out wider early in the straight but the gelding refused to wilt as he ground home best to score by three quarters of a length despite being headed halfway up the running.

“He just didn’t know what to do when he got to the front but he really knuckled down like a promising horse and did the job,” Zahra said.

“The favourite headed him but the most pleasing thing was the way he wanted to compete and wouldn’t lie down and Ben did a good job on him under pressure in the straight.

“He’ll only get better with racing and longer distances so it’s exciting”

Into Rio’s win was food for thought for those wanting to get involved with another Ellerton Zahra purchase by the well-performed galloper, who was a Group 2 winner over a mile in England in 2009.

Ellerton and Zahra has started working with a daughter of Zacinto out of the 10-time winner Of The Essence, a daughter of Kiwi staying stallion Yamanin Vital, making her the perfect Oaks filly next season.

Now you’ve seen what Mat and Simon can do with Zacinto’s progeny, why not get in touch with Ellerton Zahra Racing to find out more about the sire and this lovely two-year-old filly?
