Ballarat win not a Shock for Ellerton Zahra
Jun 15, 2017
What A Shock could not have prepared for a Flemington test in better fashion than his comfortable win at Ballarat.
The three-year-old had scored well at his previous visit to Ballarat on May 14 but circumstances had gone against What A Shock in his two subsequent runs at Sandown and Moonee Valley.
Trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra have earmarked a $100,000 race at Flemington on June 24 for What A Shock but the Benchmark 70 contest served as the perfect lead-up.
Jamie Mott was aboard What A Shock for his last win and teamed up again with the handy galloper to terrific effect at Ballarat.
Mott let What A Shock stride forward to race handy to the speed before challenging the leader on the home turn. The son of Shocking took time to get the upper hand before drawing clear late to score by a length.
Zahra said getting What A Shock travelling easily close to the speed was the key to getting the impressive result.
“He really appreciates the tempo when they can get into a rhythm here and he relaxed outside the leader and he was able to show the turn of foot that he shows at home,” Zahra said.
“He has been hustled and bustled at his last two and he’s a bit of a sook and that didn’t suit him.
“I think he’ll be better when we get him up to 2000m where he can lead and settle and get into a nice rhythm.
“We’ll probably back him up over a mile at Flemington on Saturday week and hopefully he can do the same again there.”
What A Shock’s win was his third from 13 starts while the $16,500 winner’s cheque took his stakes tally to more than $77,000.
Congratulations to syndicator First Light Racing and all of What A Shock’s terrific band of owners on another win in partnership with Ellerton Zahra Racing.
