Seas part for Josephine in Sale success

May 17, 2017

The pre-race plan meant little out on the track but that failed to prevent Josephine Sea recording a terrific debut win at Sale.

Josephine Sea had pleased jockey Chris Symons with her jumpout efforts leading up to her first start but trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra still had to find the perfect race for the filly to begin her career.

Ellerton and Zahra decided to put the daughter of Smart Missile on a float to Sale and the move paid off in the Ladbrokes 2YO Fillies Handicap.

Symons said he expected Josephine Sea to race close to the speed but that plan was shelved when the youngster jumped slowly but didn’t muster pace as quickly as expected.

However, the moderate beginning meant little as Josephine Sea showed a good turn of foot in the soft conditions to score a comfortable one-length win.

“It’s funny how things work out because nothing went to plan then,” Symons said. “I thought from the middle draw, that we would land outside the leader.

“Her trials have been terrific. She has always been that bit slow out but she musters good speed and she was a bit slow again today as she has been in her jumpouts.

“It just worked out nice because the pace was good.

“She did everything right. She was among the field and let rip with a really good turn of foot.”

The promising two-year-old’s decisive win earned connections a $12,650 winner’s cheque.

Congratulations to Jeff Allis and the team at Epona Park and all involved with the exciting performer’s debut victory.
