Derby next for Odeon after easy Caulfield win

Apr 29, 2017

Odeon will run in the South Australian Derby next following his impressive win in Saturday's Sky High Mt Dandenong Handicap (2000m) at Caulfield.

Settled midfield by Katelyn Mallyon but in clear room to halfway as Zahspeed set a steady speed, Odeon came with his challenge in the home straight and drew away inside the final 100m to score a soft win.

Mathew Ellerton, who trains Odeon in partnership with Simon Zahra, said he was delighted with the effort following a luckless last start second in the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas.

"I thought he might have been a bit fresh with the three weeks between runs but there was a good, strong tempo and he raced really well," Ellerton said.

"I glad we resisted the temptation to return to Adelaide and run in the race today (Chairman's Stakes) but we'll be back in a fortnight for the South Australian Derby.

"He ran through the line there and he's a natural athlete so I'm not concerned about the extra distance."

Ellerton said the luxury of clear running room allowed the son of Zacinto to show his best.

"He's still a bit immature in the head and he's a lot better when he's in clear room," Ellerton said.

"He's a big striding horse and Katelyn rode him well there. He was maybe a pair further back than we anticipated but he was in open air and he relaxed beautifully.

"He had a chequered run last time in Adelaide and the winner gave him a good bump on the corner but he was in the right spot today and he did it well."

Odeon continues to show the quality of the progeny of NZ-based stallion Zacinto and Ellerton Zahra Racing is offering a terrific opportunity to get involved with the ownership of another yearling by the vastly under-rated sire.
