Sheer speed earns Savitskaya a Ballarat win

Nov 02, 2015

A speed blitz landed Savitskaya back in the winner’s stall in the Hygain Handicap (1200m) at Ballarat.

Savitskaya hadn’t won since she proved too good in maiden company at Seymour in February but bounced back to her best with a dominant performance at Ballarat.

Katelyn Mallyon was in the saddle for Savitskaya’s first win but trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra booked Andrew Mallyon to partner the mare at Ballarat.

Ellerton and Zahra also decided to add blinkers to Savitskaya’s gear after her solid second at Benalla at her previous outing and the move worked perfectly.

Savitskaya jumped smartly and mustered speed quickly to find the lead comfortably soon after the start before Mallyon rated the daughter of Von Costa De Hero perfectly to the home turn.

The four-year-old opened a good break on her opposition halfway down the straight before cruising to a soft four-length win.

“We tried her over a bit more ground and she wasn’t quite seeing out her races, especially on the softer tracks,” Zahra said.

“She did a good job at Benalla so we decided to put the blinkers on her and it did the trick for her.

“Andrew rated her perfectly and she was good enough to let down and sprint away from them and really put them away easily.”

Savitskaya’s win was her second in nine outings while the $9600 winner’s cheque took her stakes tally to more than $33,000.

Congratulations to Savitskaya’s owners and all involved with the four-year-old’s impressive Ballarat victory, which completed a double for Ellerton Zahra Racing after Sun Thunder’s win earlier in the day.
