Easy work for Durendal at Pakenham

Oct 15, 2015

A solid fresh run primed smart galloper Durendal for a comfortable second-up success at Pakenham.

Durendal resumed from a terrific autumn campaign that included a stakes placing in Brisbane with a good effort when beaten less than three lengths in a strong race at Caulfield on September 26.

The effort showed the sprinter had come back well before trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra set Durendal an easier task in the Matthew Brown Racing BM84 Handicap (1200m) on the Pakenham turf track.

Durendal had little trouble accomplishing his mission under jockey Damian Lane.

Lane sent Durendal forward to track the speed before easing the son of Medaglia D’Oro to the outside of the leaders rounding the home turn.

Durendal took time to wind up to his top but the long Pakenham home straight suited him perfectly as the four-year-old surged past the leaders 100m from home before going on to score by 1-¾ lengths.

“He did that really well,” Zahra said.

“He did everything right and it was a soft win in the end. The way he did it was especially pleasing.

“He relaxed well under Damian and was able to get running at the right time and the way he finished it off was terrific.”

Ellerton and Zahra will find a city race for Durendal after he posted his fourth win from 12 starts. The $41,500 earned in prizemoney and bonuses took his stakes tally to more than $248,000.

Congratulations to everyone involved and Durendal’s owners – great stable clients Contract Racing – on yet another win in partnership with Ellerton Zahra Racing.
