Group 1 test for Heatherly in Moir Stakes

Sep 29, 2016

Heatherly will have another shot at Australia’s best sprinters when she tackles Friday night’s Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley.

The mare finished third in the Oakleigh Plate (1100m) as a three-year-old filly in the autumn, prompting trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra to aim the daughter of Lonhro at the $500,000 Moir Stakes.

Heatherly resumed with a good win at Listed level but the four-year-old had trouble at the start when third to Wild Rain in the Group 2 McEwen Stakes (1000m) on September 3.

Ellerton and Zahra have worked with Heatherly to help her with her minor barrier issues and the classy mare trialled well at Flemington to maintain fitness for the Moir Stakes.

Zahra said fitness wouldn’t be a problem for Heatherly when she takes on sprinting superstars Buffering and Chautauqua at Moonee Valley.

“Her work has been really good since her last run so that has been pleasing,” Zahra said.

“She takes on some great horses and she’ll need to be at her best but she’ll certainly be competitive if she runs up to her work.

“It’s going to be a huge test for her but she’s going really well and she deserves another go at a Group 1 win.”

Damian Lane will ride Heatherly while Ellerton and Zahra have not booked a rider for Matty, who is an emergency for the Quest Moonee Valley Plate (1200m).

Matty is unbeaten in two starts after easily handling his opposition in BM64 company at Pakenham at his last start.

“He’s done really well in his first two starts so he’s earned his way into a city race,” Zahra said.

“He’ll run well again if he gets into the race.”

Good luck to the connections of both Ellerton Zahra Racing runners at Moonee Valley.
