Record breaking season for Ellerton Zahra Racing

Aug 12, 2016

The 2015/16 campaign was simply a record-breaking season for Ellerton Zahra Racing.

The Flemington-based team prepared 88 winners for the season, eclipsing the stable’s previous best of 73 victories in the season, achieved in the 2014/15 season.

Trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra sent out a record number of 688 starters, which in turn produced $3.36 million in stakes, which is second only to the $3.48 million of the 2010/11 season.

The stable also topped its best tally of metropolitan winners with 28, which left the stable 7th in the Melbourne trainers’ premiership and 7th in the state premiership.

Classy sprinter Heatherly scored the stable’s best victory with her success in the Group 2 Rubiton Stakes (1100m) in February while Sword Of Light and Durendal gave Ellerton Zahra Racing Group 3 wins.

Another great highlight for the stable was the amazing feat of preparing four winners at Flemington’s traditional New Years’ Day meeting at which Durendal won the Standish Handicap while Want To Rock, Magna Rossa and Rough Justice also recorded wins on a memorable day for the stable.

“We’ve had a great year but we could have done it without our great staff, who outdid themselves in turning out the horses in great condition at every start,” Zahra said. “Our staff are one of our greatest assets along with our wonderful owners, who trust us with their horses and we’re very happy to be able to give them plenty of thrills during the season.”

Ellerton Zahra Racing was lucky to have such loyal jockeys as well with Damian Lane (31 wins), Chris Symons (17), Katelyn Mallyon (13) and Andrew Mallyon (8) doing a great job riding work and on raceday.

The century of winners in a season is within reach in the 2016/17 – there’s never been a better time to get involved with racing a horse with Ellerton Zahra Racing.
