Belle provides perfect finish to season at Caulfield

Jul 30, 2016

Blithe Belle lived up to co-trainer Mathew Ellerton’s quiet confidence when she finished the 2015/16 season with a win in the John Skewes Handicap (1200m) at Caulfield.

Ellerton thought the filly could end her three-year-old days with a big run after finishing close up behind the handy Majestic Lass at Caulfield a fortnight earlier.

“I thought she was a good each-way chance,” Ellerton said.

“Her last run was really good so I thought she’d be hard to beat today.”

Chris Symons stuck with Blithe Belle in her $80,000 assignment and gave the daughter of Hard Spun the opportunity to find her feet in the second half of the field until the home turn.

Blithe Belle was briefly held up early in the straight before Symons expertly steered her through a gap at the 100m.

The handy sprinter accelerated quickly when clear to get home for her second win in eight starts by a length.

“Since she won her maiden, she has just got better with every start,” Ellerton said.

“She didn’t have a lot of luck on the turn but she picked up well when she got a run and put them away.”

Blithe Belle’s victory at the final city meeting of the season landed her connections $20,000 Super VOBIS bonus, which took her stakes tally to more than $92,000.

Congratulations to Blithe Belle’s owners and all involved with her exciting city success.
