Giroux scores at Ballarat
Apr 26, 2016
Giroux made the perfect start to life with Ellerton Zahra Racing with a dominant first-up win at Ballarat.
The Sepoy filly joined the stable of trainers Mathew Ellerton and Simon Zahra for her autumn preparation after starting her career elsewhere, where she finished second at Moonee Valley at both runs in her first campaign.
Giroux showed pace and comfortably won a Flemington jumpout leading up to her first-up outing in the UMRG Maiden Plate (1100m) for two-year-olds.
Damian Lane headed to Ballarat to pilot Giroux in the $23,000 sprint and rode her positively, taking the youngster to race handy to the speed to the home turn.
Lane sent Giroux to the lead at the 200m before the chestnut drew clear late to score a dominant win.
“She didn’t come into the stable in the best of circumstances but she’s done everything right since she got here,” Zahra said.
“The way she’s gone about her work and her trial was terrific and she’s a lovely filly to do anything with.
“She especially pleased us with the way she travelled behind the leaders and settled before showing her turn of foot.
“That’s a great sign of improvement and again shows how well Damian gets horses to run for him.”
Giroux’s maiden win earned connections a $12,650 winner’s cheque, taking her stakes tally to more than $34,000 from only three starts.
Congratulations to Giroux’s owners and all involved with her impressive Ballarat success.
